Why Salary Structure Matters

Vague salary agreements cause more teacher turnover than low pay. A written structure fixes this.

The Standard Components

Basic Pay is the foundation, typically 40 to 50 percent of gross salary. All statutory calculations are based on basic.

HRA is typically 20 to 40 percent of basic and helps teachers with tax planning.

Conveyance Allowance is a fixed monthly amount for travel, tax exempt up to 1600 rupees per month.

Special Allowance is the balancing figure that makes up gross salary.

Deductions

PF is 12 percent of basic, with the employer matching it. Professional Tax is state-specific. Attendance Deduction uses daily rate equal to gross divided by working days.

Half-Day Policy

Define clearly. Most schools deduct 50 percent of the daily rate for a half-day absence.

Communicating the Structure

Give every teacher a written salary breakup letter when they join. Review annually. When teachers understand the math, payslip queries drop to near zero.
