Why Principals Need to Understand Salaries

The principal is typically not the payroll person but they sign off on pay hikes, dispute resolutions, and employment contracts. Understanding salary structures protects the school legally.

The Statutory Minimum

All teaching staff are covered by the Payment of Wages Act and if covered by PF, the Employees Provident Fund Act. Private unaided schools must pay at least the state minimum wage for skilled workers.

PF Applicability

PF is mandatory for employees with basic pay up to 15000 rupees per month. Both employer and employee contribute 12 percent each.

The Cost-to-Company Concept

When budgeting for staff, think in CTC: gross salary plus employer PF plus employer ESIC if applicable plus gratuity provision. A teacher with a gross salary of 30000 rupees per month has a CTC of approximately 33600 to 35000 rupees.

The Appointment Letter

Every salary component must be specified in the appointment letter. Verbal promises about annual increments or bonuses are not enforceable. If it is not in writing, it does not exist legally.
